Before 1993 mopeds and little cars with engine smaller than 50cc had no plate at all, then on October 1st, 1993 this little one was introduced. As you can see from the picture, the plate is pentagonal with the top corners cut and has a serial combination of 5 numbers and letters (letters I, O, Q and U are not used) issued according to a mixed sequence (0, 1, ..., 9, A, B, ..., Z). There are three holes to hang the plate to the vehicle and a seal of the Italian Republic on the left side. The province is not indicated, but in some cases it's possible to identify the city because these plates are assigned in batches to the provinces: for instance Rome had the batches 03/G00 - 04/PZZ, 09/G00 - 09/ZZZ, 0A/000 - 0A/TZZ and so on (many thanks to Guglielmo Evangelista for these data).
This plate is, differently than any other Italian one, personal: it means that you can use the same plate on several vehicles, simply moving it from one to another and you keep it when you sell the vehicle.
Size: The bases are 3.7 and 2.2 inches each and the height is 4.5 inches.
